Soooo... Any tips?

Fri Aug 21, 2009, 7:04 AM
Well, guys, LWL has her first official babysitting gig tonight ("...You're how old and just starting?")...
But, to be quite frank, as much as I love kids, I'm almost clueless as to what to do. :ohnoes:
The kids are--I BELIEVE--a 1-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl. Their the kids of one of my daddy's Marine friends. But, like I said, I'm not quite sure what to do. I'm really only going to be there for an hour before their bedtime, so it shouldn't be too difficult, but I'd really, really, REALLY appreciate any words of wisdom you internet peeps can give me.
...
I'm asking the internet for help with children?! Heaven help me... :XD:

Ad Vitam Aeternam

With Castille joining the Merry Band of Thieves, there comes many upsides and consequences. One is the well-traveled Sanctuary Leader has many connections and manages to hire an old friend to ferry the group down the Nilanyo River to Kiskyro, Sandy the Witch's home. He also takes it upon himself to continue Kaylee's lessons in soul energy.
However, the longer they spend with Castille, the more and more they notice that the man is hiding something.
And now that Castille is in the group, Liam's opportunity for revenge has never been closer.

Ask the parents what their rules are and if the children misbehave what they would like you to do. Also ask the parents what the children like to do, what their fav movies, games, food, playthings are etc.

"No" is not a bad word and should be used if needed. You shouldn't be afraid to hurt their feelings especially if it means keeping them from hurting themselves.

Also knowing when bedtime is and enforcing it firmly yet kindly is good for children. Keeping set schedules and rules are essential.

Uuuuum.....gee I'm not good with babies....little kids are always fun. I remember my younger days so well....Kids like to play, and they like to show people things. Be a good babysitter and get engaged with them, but they also need to learn responsibility. make sure they help out and reward them with fun and games. But don't take so much time to focus on the kids, make sure the house looks good, do a few extra things to keep it clean etc.

Kids can be fun and they LOVE interaction. but remember to have a reward/punishment system down. don't be as strict as the parents, but make sure they atleast know whats going too far, and bottom line, HAVE FUN!!!

Rewards, punishment, that sounds exactly like my personal motto. :XD:
I'm going to be there for a few hours, but the kids are really going to be awake for only the first hour. I guess my biggest concern is getting them to go to bed because kids ALWAYS try to push the first-time babysitter and see how late they can stay up. I did. :XD:

Lawl, "show people things". Too true. :XD:

But thanks! ~

Bed time is definately my biggest concern. Kids ALWAYS like to see how far they can push their new babysitter when it comes to bedtime. The 1-year-old shouldn't be too much of a problem but the four-year-old is probably just getting over the Terrible Toddler stage, but I really don't know. Even my 12-year-old brother gives me trouble when I tell him to go to bed. :XD:

Thankies~.

I wish I could help, I've never taken care of children before! :ohnoes:

Pay attention to anything the parents have to say. That’s step number one, I think.

Other than that, Good Luck!

It was funny, because every thing the parents told me and I tried made things worse. :lmao:
"Oh, they're going to bed in 30 minutes. You can do a puzzle and they'll calm down."
*a little bit later...*
"Heh, guys, what puzzle do you want to do?"
"THIS ONE!!"
"NO, THIS ONE!!"
"NO!!"

Little kids and puppies are a lot alike. I could say the same about kittens too.
Little kids have their own language if you speak it they will listen. You talk with a higher tone but slightly strained as if you were Mr. Gibbs straining to tell a story.
Their attention span is 2 seconds long so forget long activities. They LOOOOVE stories!
I was a nursery teacher at my church so I had to handle the 3 and two year olds. One game we plaed is I wold count to three and lif a blanket in the air and they would have to run under it before it settled. They LOVED that one.
